A case of Diarrhoea after antibiotics:
Anamnesis: A 40-year old woman previously had pneumonia and took antibiotics 3-weeks ago and has had diarrhoea ever since. she frequently needs to go to the toilet. the evacuation of the stool is noisy and much gas escapes which causes a sputtering noise and soils the whole toilet bowl.  The urge to stool comes on suddenly and usually after she has eaten. The pneumonia started after the death of a relative whom she loved too much. Prior to that, she had no complaints except for a yearly flu, sometimes with high fever. Gastrointestinal complaints are not common in his family. She is very reserved man who does not talk about her emotions. She is chilly and does not feel well in cold damp or foggy weather. Her appetite and thirst are normal. She prefers to eat fish. She sleeps well.
Analysis: The main complaint is on the physical level on a superficial area, the mucous membranes. In all cases of diarrhoea we have to be aware of the danger of possible dehydration, especially in young children and elderly persons. In this case we have to be aware that although the current problem is physical, the original cause is probably an emotional disturbance. The patient, a very reserved woman who does not talk about her emotions, suffered the loss of a relative who she loved very much. Hereafter she developed pneumonia, a complaint whereby an organ is affected in a deeper area of the physical plane than was the case with gastrointestinal complaints.
Personal Medical History: The patient is in a good condition and does not have a history of gastrointestinal complaints. She is susceptible to infrequent acute diseases with high fever and therefore belongs to upper level of health. Both are positive for the prognosis.
Family Medical History: The fact that gastrointestinal complaints are not common in her family is also positive for the prognosis. Otherwise, the hereditary predisposition might make the case more difficult.
Conclusion: In this case the acute physical complaint originates from an emotional cause. The patient probably could not express her grief and the organism became imbalanced due to the stress suffered. It is a good sign that the defence mechanism was able to produce an acute physical disease instead of for instance an emotional symptoms like depression. Nevertheless, the defence mechanism is not strong enough to protect organs and produce a more superficial disease like for instance a skin eruption.
Investigating the case further we notice that there are in fact two causes, the grief after the death of a loved one resulting in pneumonia and the use of antibiotics resulting in the current complaint of diarrhoea. This combination might complicate the case. We might first need to prescribe a remedy to solve the current problem and afterwards need to treat the underlying problem caused by the loss of a loved one. This would mean that two new remedy layers developed. Whether this happens depends on the overall state of health of the patient and the condition of the defence mechanism at the time of the stressor.
As the overall state of health is good and the patient belongs to a higher level, the prognosis is good.
Selection of symptoms, repertorisation (online analysis) and medicine selection:
We chose the following symptoms:
  1. Mind – reserved
  2. Stool – noisy
  3. Stool – flatulent
  4. Stool – sputtering
  5. Generals – Heat – lack of Vital heat
  6. Generals – weather – cold weather – wet – aggravates
  7. Generals – food and drinks – fish – desire
  8. Rectum – Urging – sudden
  9. Rectum – diarrhoea – drugs – after
  10. Generals – History – personal – antibiotics – use of
  11. Generals – Medicine – Allopathic – abuse of
From the online repertorisation we found that the top ten remedies were: Nat-s, Tub, Nat-m, Lach, Sulph, Agar, Aloe, Calc. Nit-ac, Ferr.
But Nat-s Scores the best on totality and keynotes. The Psychological essence also fits the case. Nat-s also fits the chronic symptoms, the generals of the patients. This means that the remedy is similar to the acute condition as well as the chronic.
Choice of potency and course of treatment: As the patient belongs to the highest level of health we can use almost any potency to start the treatment. Because he seems to be rather sensitive it is better to be careful and not to start too high. After taking 3 doses of 30 in two days all complaints disappeared. There was no relapse for the next 10 years.
What a successful case!!!!!!!!!!!
Learning Point: We have learnt that how an emotional problem causes disease in the physical level and how quickly it can be cured with proper homeopathic treatment.
